Aristotle's Topics is imbued with Platonic references. One particularly interesting case is represented by his discussion of two definitions of beauty drawn from the Hippias Major: ‘beauty is the appropriate’ (Top. 102a6 and 135a13; Hipp. I 293d6-294e10) and ‘beauty is what is pleasant to sight and hearing’ (Top. 146a21-23; Hipp. I 299c4-300b5). In the modern debate on the dialogue's authenticity, these passages are commonly accepted as evidence in its favour (Petrucci 2012). However, the accuracy of Aristotle's references has been questioned (Brunschwig 2007) and their details have not yet been sufficiently explored. Thus, in my paper, I shall take a close look at the three quotations from the Hippias Major contained in Aristotle's Topics. It will turn out that, although these references are used to illustrate parts of Aristotle's own theory, they presuppose a careful reading of the Hippias Major.
